One of mine, too. In fact, I have a Germany travel planning website, too, if you’re planning a trip to Germany (MyGermanyVacation.com) ?

German bakeries are the BEST! Yep, I ate a lot of Brezel when I lived there. Still one of the first things I buy whenever I’m back in Germany. I make them at home, too! So good!

I was born about 30 min from Stuttgart, however live now in Australia. Still make plum cake and Blackforrest cake now and then, when the kids lived at home I used to cook a lot more German food. Miss the bakeries with their wide selection of cakes and pastries, that was always a must when I went back to Germany. My mum used to make the Apfelstrudel, and I remember her pointing out that one must see the hands through the dough. She came from Hessia and on holidays at my aunties I enjoyed Rote Gruetze. Food in my childhood days was more area specific then. Did you try the soft Brezel when you stayed in Stuttgart?

It’s bittersweet to have memories of loved ones connected to specific recipes like that. 🙂

That’s so interesting! Maybe the family I first ate it with liked to eat it warm (topped with very cold cream) or maybe was just still warm when it was served. I’ve asked a lot of Germans how they like to eat Rote Grütze over the years (if they even eat it) and gotten a lot of different answers! I am happy that it’s made its way down south so I can enjoy it when I’m elsewhere in Germany.

It is meant to be a refreshing, cold dessert for warm summer days.
Over the years, it got so popular that it made its way down further south and now can be found even in Bavaria.
