You can put it on cakes, bread, pancakes, desserts, etc. and it’s always called hagelslag.

What you made is “broodje hagelslag” which translates to “chocolate sprinkle sandwich.” Butter is optional, because it’s very helpful to let the hagelslag stick to the bread, but a lot of Dutch people don’t like butter on their sandwich (like me).

Also, white bread is not uncommon, but it’s mostly eaten by children. Adults mostly go for a two slice sandwich of whole wheat bread or brown bread for breakfast.

I’ve heard it called that by my Australian friends! Always with the colored sprinkles. Do you know if using the chocolate sprinkles is very common?

Love the stuff, no day goes by without hagelslag for breakfast! I was in The Netherlands in April and didn t come across this delicious breakfast. We definitely missed out!
