Not sure why you deleted this image. As you can see on Flickr, it meets Commons policies as it is within the allowed licensing. Editorofthewiki (talk) 14:04, 29 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Editorofthewiki: OK done. There was no license, and the watermark made me to think that it was a copyright violation. Please upload the crop under a new file. Yann (talk) 14:19, 29 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Bonjour Yann,

J'espère que tout va bien. ;)

Je me suis permis de dépoussiérer et retoucher superficiellement cette photo [1] pour qu'elle soit mieux adaptée à une publication numérique. Bonne après-midi (au frais, j'espère). Tisourcier (talk) 13:49, 1 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Mass deletion

It is sad you marked my entire hard work for mass deletion these work are my life and they all belongs to me they are not copy write I made them. And they are not small. Why would you decide it. For the arms I don’t understand why my own work and projects is being asked to be deleted these belongs to me. I own them and I made them. Why will you be demanding for it to be deleted? How else can i prove to you I own them? I have the raw files and how they were made here with me. Repair it (talk) 18:27, 3 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Repair it: Hi, From your uploads and the information you give, it seems that you do not understand how copyright works. Copying a file from the Internet doesn't make you the copyright holder. I doubt you created all the files you uploaded as you claim. For the pictures, if you are the photographer, please upload the original pictures with EXIF data. Otherwise, we need a formal written permission for a free license from the copyright holder via COM:VRT. Thanks, Yann (talk) 16:00, 4 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I did not copy it from the internet I own them and made them myself and I’ve sent mail proving my ownership. Thanks they’ll handle it from here. Repair it (talk) 18:56, 4 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

upload audio file.

Hello, I need help uploading a 7-minute audio file, which is an ethics interview with a professor at my university. This audio file is the final module of the Wikiversity assignment, which I am required to upload here on Wikimedia Commons. The file complies with all the site's rules and guidelines, but I still get the following message: "MP3 uploads have been disabled by default due to copyright concerns." It asks me to apply for a copyright claim. The content is educational and informative. Thank you in advance. Victoria Regina Siqueira Manara (talk) 20:31, 3 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Victoria Regina Siqueira Manara: It seems you managed to upload it at File:Entrevista com professora pesquisadora da UNESP.ogg. For MP3 files, you will have to wait that you have sufficient experience, i.e. at least 500 useful edits. Thanks, Yann (talk) 16:03, 4 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Olá!! Consegui fazer o upload da entrevista! Precisava converter para .ogg e deu certo! É a atividade final do módulo 3 da Wikiversity de Jornalismo Científico; está tudo em conformidade agora. Muito obrigada! Victoria Regina Siqueira Manara (talk) 21:07, 4 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

request for feedback

Hello. I'd like to make contact regarding the proposal Commons:Village pump/Proposals#remove mandatory username verification from username policy. A private discussion with uninvolved bureaucrats concluded that the proposal has not enough participation to be closed currently, and it was suggested by crats to put a notice at the talk pages of the ten most active admins and ask for feedback, which I'm doing hereby. If possible please comment directly in the proposal with your opinion.

(I hope this is not interpreted as canvassing. I was told it's not as the criteria of contacted users is clearly defined, and the proposal was already mentioned at several noticeboards. Please don't feel biased because of being personally contacted.)

Thank you, yours --Krd 09:53, 4 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

IP Block Exemption

Hi Yann,

You granted me !P Block Exemption just over 6 months ago and it has now expired. I use a VPN as part of my antivirus software and it is a pain to turn it on and off in order to edit commons. I have the right on both enwiki and wikidata. Can you please grant me the right again? TarnishedPathtalk 11:05, 4 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Suppression de mon ajout de document

Bonjour,

Cordialement, Yann (talk) 16:05, 4 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Pokémon planes, DR

Yann, what's your opinion: should we list the other DR about planes with Pokémon liveries in your VPC thread or not? It would currently be:

I'm the opener on those and preferred there to parse the plane immatriculation categories instead of doing something motif-related, hence they are only similar, but not a complete reprise to the file listing in Commons:Deletion requests/Pokemon Jet.
And may I place a personal question, too? As I'm able to use both English and French too, what's your actual preference when addressing you?
Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 17:41, 4 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Thanks for your message. Yes, the decision should apply to all these files. It is probably best to list them all.
My mother tongue is French, but I usually use English on Commons (in which I am quite fluent), specially when there are several people concerned. So it doesn't matter to me, use the language as you like. Yann (talk) 19:39, 4 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

License review

Hello Yann, since you're an admin, could you please review the license in this image. The GODLicense applies to "all shareable non-sensitive data available either in digital or analog forms but generated using public funds by various agencies of the Government of India." ISRO is India's national space agency under dept. of space of govt. of India, my guess would be that GODL does apply. On ISRO's own website, under copyright policy it states that all featured material "may be reproduced free of charge in any format or media without requiring specific permission" in an 'accurate, non-derogatory and non-misleading manner', except for material "explicitly identified as being the copyright of a third party" which the image does not seem to be.

So my impression is that it is accurately licensed, but another opinion would be better. UnpetitproleX (Talk) 11:34, 6 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I saw https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wormatia_08_Logo_2008.png was deleted. I'm from the board of the club and we are totally fine with the logo being on Wikimedia / Wikipedia (and personally I want it to be). Since it is gone, people use an old round logo instead that's still one here - which makes me mad, because I always have to explain that this is not the right one. I used to refer to Wikipedia when someone asked me about the png... I saw in the deletion request that you need permission from the copyright holder. So how do we do that, what do yoo need? --DeArchivBub (talk) 11:36, 9 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@DeArchivBub: Hi, A legal representative from the copyright holder (either the club or the person who created this, depending on the contract) must send a confirmation of the license by email. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. The file will be undeleted if and when the permission is validated by a volunteer. Thanks, Yann (talk) 17:21, 9 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Asking for deleting photos

Hello Yann. Why my photos are got deleted? Maybe i uploaded over 20 photos. All of them deleted. Can you tell me what is the cause MuratbekErkebulan (talk) 09:58, 10 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@MuratbekErkebulan: All your uploads are copyright violations. Please do not upload anything copied from the Internet, or you will get blocked. Please read COM:L. Thanks, Yann (talk) 15:34, 10 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

File:Oscar Burritt (ca. 1940).png

Hi Yann: Thank you for your message about this image. As I indicated, this picture of Oscar is a digital frame grab from the experimental film "and-" And (film). The film was made in 1940-41 by Dorothy Burritt [nee Fowler] (d. 1963) and Margaret Roberts (presumably deceased). The original of the film is held by Library and Archives Canada; it was donated to the archives by Burritt executor Douglas S. Wilson, who is (surprise!) also deceased. In 1989, Mr. Wilson gave me written permission to obtain a copy of "and-" and use it in my research and proposed documentary about Dorothy and Oscar Burritt. I'm wondering if Wilson's permission letter could be construed as a license to use this image. The Burritts had no children, so trying to trace a current copyright holder would be a dead end. Is my due diligence enough? Any thoughts? Filmhunter (talk) 19:20, 10 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Filmhunter: Hi, Where was this film first published? I am not sure that {{PD-Canada}} applies. So this is probably an orphan work. Yann (talk) 12:39, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi again. The film was first "published" through public screening(s) in Vancouver in 1941-42. I agree, this could be considered an orphan work. If so, what license would apply? I appreciate your help, Yann! Filmhunter (talk) 17:25, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Filmhunter: If it is in the public domain in Canada, then I would support keeping it, although some people would say it is not in the public domain in USA. Could you please find out when Margaret Roberts died? What copyright status does the Library and Archives Canada give? Yann (talk) 17:43, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Library and Archives Canada says that "Copyright owner is probably Dorothy Fowler Burritt." I can't find Margaret Roberts' death date; I searched, but it's way too common a name. Does Wikimedia have the option of an "orphan work" license? I suppose I could attempt to get Copyright Canada to recognize it as an orphan work, but that's a LOT of work--and I suspect it wouldn't solve the problem. Filmhunter (talk) 17:32, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Filmhunter: I created {{Orphan work}}, but it doesn't replace the license. You could try arguing for PD-Canada. Yann (talk) 17:34, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
PS: Here's a thought. Dorothy Burritt died in 1963, so her Canadian copyright would have expired at the end 2013, after 50 years. (The copyright protection was later changed to maker's death year + 70 years, but that change explicitly DIDN'T re-instate any already expired copyrights on works that had already moved into the public domain.) As an archivist and authority on the Burritt films, I think it's entirely reasonable to say that Dorothy Fowler was the principal creator of "and-". If so, maybe only Dorothy's death date matters?
I realize that the above may only resolve the copyright problem from the Canadian perspective. Filmhunter (talk) 17:43, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Filmhunter: Yes. Do you know if the film was screened in USA? That could also solve the US copyright. Yann (talk) 17:48, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
A US screening seems unlikely. Any screening would have required the film, two phorograph records, a dual turntable, and an operator who knew the film.! I'll do a newspaper search, but it's pretty unlikely.
I think I've made a good argument above for a PD-Canada license. How can I add that info to the uploaded file? The note could state: "Based on the 1963 death date of principal creator Dorothy (Fowler) Burrit, the film "and--" is now in the Public Domain under Canadian copyright law." Filmhunter (talk) 17:58, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Filmhunter: Yes, please add the license in the file. You can add other information either in the description or in the Permission field. Yann (talk) 18:30, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I've just added the PD-Canada license, .my permissions statement, and a "fair use rationale" to the detail space for this image. Will that resolve the issue? Filmhunter (talk) 19:59, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Filmhunter: Fair use is not accepted on Commons, so I removed it. Yann (talk) 09:40, 13 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

About Image Cup 1988

Hi @Yann, thank you for responding and taking appropriate action regarding the image I mistakenly posted. I confess I'm still a bit confused about how to upload an image to the platform, due to my lack of experience. How can I get this image that appears in this file (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1988_FIFA_Tourny_ISL.jpg) to be used in this article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_FIFA_Women%27s_Invitation_Tournament) or this one featured on this website (https://museudofutebol.org.br/crfb/acervo/781545/) to be included in this article editing for me in Portuguese wiki (https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torneio_Experimental_da_China)? From what I see, since it is already available in an infobox of an entry, it is the same image, so this one is already licensed, or am I mistaken? Could you help me with this? Thank you in advance for your attention. Sorry for my bad english! Best regards! Borghi1811 (talk) 04:22, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Borghi1811: Fair use policy on Portuguese Wikipedia is apparently here. I can't read Portuguese, so please see if it can be uploaded locally, but it is not allowed on Commons without a formal written permission from the copyright holder. Yann (talk) 12:43, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

File:Débat Toulouse.png

Hello, you deleted this file in lack of a license. The uploader has since recreated the file page and there put the missing license. Either, if the license seems legit, I guess merge the edit onto the previous and recreate the file. Or if the license is bogus, delete the fileless filepage. Jonteemil (talk) 19:55, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

OK, done. Yann (talk) 20:19, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Question about speedy delete criteria F1 vs F3

I nominated File:Garrett Blackwelder.jpg for speedy deletion. It appears to be a screenshot from Garrett Blackwelder's Linkedin page. I was initially going to call it a copyvio (F1), but as it seems to be a cropped screenshot, I deemed it F3. Did I do this correctly?

  • F1. Clear copyright violation
  • F3. Derivative work of non-free content

-- ERcheck (talk) 03:32, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@ERcheck: Yes, that's fine. Yann (talk) 15:04, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

sure, why not...

My only question is: why have you done this?

What proof do you have that I didn't shoot those pictures? Show me actual evidence that these files are not my own work.

You literally nominated for deletion a thumbnail created on my personal computer, which includes my own face.

Did you even bother to do any kind of research before flagging all my uploads?

This is not about copyright anymore - this is abuse of service and power. You didn’t verify anything. You just blindly deleted everything, without checking the source or author. That is unacceptable. MSVED (talk) 17:38, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@MSVED: Hi, Since you have a large amount of copyright violations, it is difficult to trust you, and in the absence of evidence everything you have uploaded is doubtful. I suggest that you always upload the original images with EXIF data. Or if not possible, please confirm the license by email via COM:VRT. Thanks, Yann (talk) 09:20, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
